Brussels Tourist Attractions
By Milan Matchev of ArrangeYourVacation
The 1000 year old Brussels city is in many ways the ultimate European city. It is also the headquarters of the EU (European Union) and NATO. The city is therefore often referred to as the Capital of Europe. The well laid out modern city of Brussels offers numerous tourist attractions. The city is famous for its splendid architectural styles, a historic market square, over 80 museums, its delightful restaurants and a vibrant night life. The architect Victor Horta is credited with the numerous Art Nouveau architectural style architectural buildings. A visit to Brussels should start with the magnificent Grand Place. It was built as the merchant’s market in the 13th century and serves as the center of the city. It hosts numerous concerts and festivals. Besides the medieval Grand Place, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, other attractions in Brussels include the Gothic town hall, the Royal Palace, the St. Michael and Gudula Cathedral and the Laken Castle. Another famous landmark is the Royal Palace. The central market square of Brussels is one of the most beautiful squares in the world. The splendid 15th century Town Hall, dotted with many small statues dominates the square. The elegant square is surrounded by many splendid 17th century buildings, with golden inlays. The famous Manneken Pis statue which is close by is a bronze statue of a pissing boy. The statue is so well known that it has almost come to represent the city. Other must see places include the Cathedral of Saint Michel, and the Palais de Justice. Nature lovers like to visit the splendid parks and forests like the Bois de la Cambre and the Forêt de Soignes. Do take time out to visit the Atomium which is a symbolic 103-metre tall structure. It consists of nine steel spheres connected by tubes, representing a model of an iron crystal. Just beside the Atomium is the Mini Europe Park. The Park houses replicas built to scale of some of the most famous buildings from across Europe. Brussels plays host to numerous world famous museums. These include the famous Comic Museum, Royal Museum of Fine Art, and the Museum of the Army and the Museum of Modern Art. The Royal Museum of Fine Art has a good collection of Flemish masters especially Rogier van der Weyden, Robert Campin, and Anthony van Dyck. The Comic Museum is devoted to famous Belgian comic strip stars like Tintin, Cubitus and Lucky Luke. During the evening, you can visit the Brussels Theatre or the La Monnaie Theatre. If you are musically inclined just take in the lively music scene at the numerous concert halls, music bars and techno clubs. If you care for a bite after all the museum hopping, just drop in to the “Petite Rue des Bouchers". Almost every house in the street is a restaurant and you can enjoy your food as you gaze on the tourists strolling on the streets. How to reach: The city has direct high speed rail links to all major European cities like London, Amsterdam, Paris, Cologne and Frankfurt. The city is also served by the Brussels Airport. |
