Quebec City
By Milan Matchev of ArrangeYourVacation
Quebec City is the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec and the second largest city in the province. The city itself holds the only remaining fortified city walls in the Americas north of Mexico and were declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. It is also one of the oldest cities in North America, as it was founded in 1608. There are many beautiful attractions in and around the city that draw visitors to the area every year. One of the most beautiful are the Montmorency Falls and the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. The city is also known for it's Winter Carnival and for Saint-Jean-Beaptiste Day celebrations. The Parc Aquarium du Quebec reopened in 2002 after repairs and updates to the building. The site that the aquarium sits on overlooks the St. Lawrence River and has over 10,000 specimens of mammals, fish, reptiles, and other fauna of North America and the Arctic. There are also polar bears and other species of seals in the Arctic sector. Of course, there are many other museums in the city that visitors enjoy year round. The city also holds some beautiful architecture, most of which is located in Old Quebec and Place Royale. This area is distinctly European and holds many stone buildings and winding streets that are lined with restaurants and shops. Porte St-Louis and Porte St-Jean are the main ways to reach Old Quebec, as these are the areas where the stone walls have gates from one of the more modern sections of town. West of these walls are the Parliament Hill district and the Plains of Abraham. The skyline of Quebec City is dominated by Chateau Frontenac Hotel, which is on top of Cap-Diamant. This hotel is set beside Dufferin Terrace, which is a walkway along the edge of the cliff, and gives visitors breathtaking views of the Saint Lawrence River. The Dufferin Terrace also leads toward the Plains of Abraham, which is the site of the battle where the British took Quebec from France. The Citadelle of Quebec also sits here, which is a Canadian Forces installation. You will also find the Notre-Dame de Quebec Cathedral near the Chateau Frontenac Hotel, which is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec. It is the first church to be raised to a basilica and is the primatial church of Canada. Since there are so many different areas of Quebec City, there are just as many different places to stay on a vacation here. But, one of the very best ways to see the city and enjoy everything that there is to see and do is to find one of the thousands of Quebec vacation rentals. You can find everything from historical homes to luxury villas that will offer any type of amenity that you need or want. Make sure that you check when festivals are occurring or you may find yourself without a rental.
