Travel Guide to Delphi
By Milan Matchev
Lying on the slopes of Mt. Parnassus is Delphi, which is considered by the ancients to be the center of the world. It was the location of a classic Panhellenic sanctuary of Greece. The oracle of Delphi was a religious center and is famous for its accurate prediction of the future. The Temple of Apollo (4th century BC), the Treasury of the Athenians (6th century BC), the stadium (5th century BC), the tholos and the gymnasium are the important architectural pieces of Delphi today. Temple of ApolloToday, a few of its Doric columns remain standing. However, one can still see the distinguished foundations which reminds of the Temple’s splendor in ancient times. Tholos Tholos has become the trademark image that represents Delphi and is one of the most photographed monuments of Greece. Treasury of the Athenians A beautiful circular building that was built between 380 and 360 BCE. Only three of its original twenty Doric columns remain standing today. The museum of Delphi houses some very important work of Art from ancient Greece. The Omphalos, the frieze from the treasury of the Syphnians, the frieze from the Treasury of the Athenians, the Kouroi Kleovis and Biton, and the Charioteer of Delphi bronze statue are the most famous among its exhibitions. The Kouroi (Kleovis and Biton) During the archaic era, these statues are a great example of the power and raw energy. Friezes from the treasuries of the Athenians and the Syphnians They give description to the mythological scenes and battles from the Illiad. Charioteer of Delphi This is a bronze statue from the “severe” period of Classical art. It embodies the classical ideals that call for modesty and self-control even in times of triumph or disaster. Delphi has been a host for a conglomerate of cultural activities, ranging from poetry reading and theatrical plays, to athletic events similar to the Olympics, called the Pythian Games. To honor Apollo, this Pythian Games took place every four years. Beside those athletic events, there are also poetry and musical competitions. It would only take one hour and thirty minutes to reach Delphi from Athens by car. Simply drive north on E75, and then east through Livadia towards Itea. It is exciting as you climb the road to Mt. Parnasos and passes through the winter resort of Arachova. Also, you can drive from Patra by simply heading north through the Rio-Antirio bridge and then west toward Itea keeping the Korinthian Gulf to the right. It could also be a good day trip from either Athens or Patra but you need a place to stay overnight. |

Thank you for sharing this information on Delphi, Milan. Love the Image!! Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
I'd love to visit Delphi where every four years, starting in 586 BC athletes from all over the Greek world competed in the Pythian Games. What a wealth of history lives there. Thank you for writing this wonderful intel.
